Do you regularly frequent a business that would be willing to donate a gift card? The Story of The Stolen Courthouse first heard in a Storm Cellar in Hawarden

In February, 2017, the Boy Scouts of America announced the new "Adventure" merit badge  to be earned by Scouts who study and learn about Adventure activities such as backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, etc. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/Youth/Awards/NOA.aspx My RAGBRAI adventure this year is dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America, Grand Canyon Council, Camelback District.  Please consider making a donation to my GoFundMe campaign. https://www.gofundme.com/bike-ride-across-iowa-for-bsa I begin the adventure today in Orange City, Iowa.  I previously told you about being herded into a storm cellar of a house in Hawarden, Iowa, in 1998.  I heard the beginning of the story of the stolen Courthouse in that crowded basement that day.  Sioux County, Iowa, was established in 1860.  Calypso was designated as the County seat, which is now part of  Hawarden, Iowa.  Calypso and Hawarden are located on the bank of the Big Sioux River...

Kent McClelland's father passed away

Kent McClelland served as our Committee Chair during the interim period last year. His father Norman passed away Tuesday  July 13 2017. Both of these gentlemen have a long history with our Troop 441.   A rizona’s Leading Irish Citizen Philanthropist and Millionaire passes away If you knew Kent or Norman, you may wish to attend the service: MEMORIAL SERVICE UPDATE : A public viewing and visitation will be held on Friday, July 21 st from 5:00-8:00 PM in the Sanctuary.   The memorial service will be held in the Sanctuary on Saturday, July 22 nd at 10:00AM .  Pastor Joynt will preside.

Sea Base 2017 recap

12 Scouts attended forming 2 crews each with their own boat 4 Adults attended – Thank You to all the volunteer Adult Leaders that made this happen Sea Base supplied the Captains Lots of sailing and world class snorkeling Each Scout sailed 56+ miles The total miles sailed by the Scouts was  702 miles Scouts each also hiked 5+ Miles The Total miles hiked by the Scouts was 72 miles Total nights camped 83 (7 per Scout) (Edited to protect scouts identity) Parents  We all made it safe and sound to the hotel in Saint Tomas. We spent the day on the beach swimming and having lunch. Check-in to the rooms at 4 pm and most enjoyed a little nap. OK well I did anyway.  Took a cab into town, had dinner and shop for breakfast fixings to prepare in our rooms in the am. We will be getting scout S tomorrow and boarding the boats between 1-3.  Looks like most of the dads have Cell Service so we should be able ...

19 Scouts attended Camp Geronimo Troop earned the Big G Gold Award! John Asher was the Geronimo Scoutmaster – Thank You!!! Emerald Bay 2017 Recap

Had 12 Scouts attended Camp Emerald Bay Stayed the night on the U.S.S. Iowa before taking the ferry Kayaking, Snorkeling, Bike Riding and overnight War Canoe Outing 4 Scouts completed the Mile Swim Total Merit Badges earned: 39 Total Miles Biked: 94 Total Miles Paddled: 60 Total Nights Camped: 84 (Edited to protect scout’s identity) The scouts had a jammed pack week at Emerald Bay… here is the recap: Saturday afternoon we arrived in Long Beach and boarded the USS Iowa.  The scouts were treated to dinner and then a 2+ hour tour of the ship.  They slept in the sleeping quarters with two other troops, who, coincidentally, were also headed to Camp Emerald Bay. On Sunday morning we walked over to the Catalina ferry terminal and headed to Emerald Bay.  We saw several pods of dolphins and some curious sea lions.  In fact, the ferry had to slow for the dolphins until they passed by.  Once at camp we were escorted to our campsit...

All, Thanks for your willingness to assist with the preparation for this year’s Memorial Day Service of Remembrance for our deceased veterans. Your assistance enabled us to have a Service of Remembrance with the proper tone of respect and spirit of gratitude for the lives of those we honor on Memorial Day. Many members of Valley Presbyterian Church have again expressed to me their gratitude for the way in which our church honors deceased veterans. I pass those expressions of gratitude on to you. We have been fortunate that most of the major wars that the United States has fought have not been within our country’s borders. As we see the ravages of war during this past year in other parts of the world, it remains important for us to continue to understand that we need to remain vigilant. BSA Youth Protection Mission Statement True youth protection can be achieved only through the focused commitment of everyone in Scouting. It is the mission of Youth Protection volunteers and professionals to work within the Boy Scouts of America to maintain a culture of Youth Protection awareness and safety at the national, regional, area, council, district, and unit levels. Troop 441 encourages ALL parents to read the Youth Protection information page and take the BSA Youth Protection Training. You are required to complete the training and turn in your certificate to troop leadership if you plan on attending hikes, camps or joining the board - INVOLVEMENT IN ANY SITUATION WHERE YOU HAVE CONTACT WITH THE SCOUTS.
